Residential Tree Protection Planning: A Holly Drive Project

When construction and mature trees share the same site, the most important decisions often happen before equipment arrives. This residential project in El Dorado County required a clear picture of the existing trees, the proposed improvements, and the areas where construction activity could affect roots, trunks, and canopies.

The goal was not simply to produce a tree map. It was to turn site observations and construction information into a document that could help the owner and project team make practical, defensible decisions.

THE PROJECT CHALLENGE

The property contained numerous established trees near proposed work areas, utilities, access routes, and other site improvements. A standard aerial image could show the general setting, while the construction drawings showed the planned work. Neither source, by itself, clearly communicated where individual trees and their protection needs fit into the project.

The assignment required these layers to be brought together in one organized exhibit.

FIELD INVENTORY AND SITE REVIEW

Each relevant tree was assigned a unique identification number and documented in the field. The inventory provided a consistent way to connect tree locations with condition observations, recommendations, and future project discussions.

Tree status categories were then used to distinguish different management needs, including retention, monitoring, pruning, construction mitigation, removal, and new planting. This allowed the exhibit to communicate more than location alone.

MAPPING THE CONSTRUCTION CONTEXT

The tree information was integrated with a subdued aerial base and key construction-plan elements. Property lines, proposed improvements, utility information, disturbance limits, and other relevant site features could be viewed in relation to the inventoried trees.

Tree Protection Zones and Critical Root Zones were shown where appropriate. These areas help the project team understand where excavation, grading, trenching, material storage, access, and equipment movement may require additional planning or arborist oversight.

A CLEAR PROJECT DELIVERABLE

The resulting tree location and protection exhibit provided a shared visual reference for the owner, contractor, designer, and arborist. A clear legend explained the tree-status symbols and protection areas, while the construction layer kept the recommendations connected to the actual project.
